Arif Virani Biography
Arif Virani is a Canadian politician and lawyer. He is the current minister of justice and attorney general of Canada, and the member of Parliament for Parkdale—High Park in Toronto. He belongs to the Liberal Party of Canada.
He was born in Uganda in 1971 and came to Canada as a refugee with his family in 1972. He has a degree in law from the University of Toronto and has worked as a human rights lawyer and a constitutional litigator.
He is also a multilingual Ismaili Muslim who speaks English, French, Gujarati, Hindi, and Urdu.

Arif Virani was born in Uganda in 1971 and came to Canada as a refugee with his family in 1972. He grew up in the Flemingdon Park and Willowdale neighbourhoods of Toronto.
He received a joint honours Bachelor of Arts in political science and history from McGill University in 1994. He then graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law.
He attended a two-year conservatory program at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York, where he worked with award-winning actors and teachers.

Arif Virani Career
Arif Virani has had a diverse and successful career in the legal and political fields. He began his legal career by articling for Fasken Martineau DuMoulin in 1999. He then worked in London, United Kingdom for a year with the support of the Harold G. Fox scholarship.
He also worked as an analyst with the Canadian Human Rights Commission in Ottawa and an investigator at la Commission des droits de la personne et droits de la jeunesse in Montreal.
He completed international human rights research on caste discrimination in Northern India, and served as a programme officer with the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative in New Delhi.
He was one of the founding board members of the South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario in Toronto, which provides direct legal services for low-income people of South Asian heritage.
He worked as a constitutional litigator at the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario, advocating for human rights and access to justice.
He also worked as an Assistant Trial Attorney prosecuting genocide at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
Arif Virani was elected as the Member of Parliament for Parkdale—High Park in 2015, representing the Liberal Party of Canada.
He has served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, to the Minister of Canadian Heritage (Multiculturalism), to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and to the Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development.
He was appointed as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada in July 2023 by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
