Bukar Abba Ibrahim Biography

Bukar Abba Ibrahim was a distinguished Nigerian politician, renowned for his extensive political career. He served as the senator representing the Yobe East senatorial district from 2007 to 2019 and held the esteemed position of governor of Yobe State twice, from 1992 to 1993 and again from 1999 to 2007.

He was a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party. He died in Saudi Arabia on 4 February 2024, at the age of 73.

He had a Bachelor of Science degree in Quantity Surveying from Ahmadu Bello University and he was married to three wives: Maryam, Aishatu, and Khadija, who is also a politician and former minister of state for foreign affairs.

Bukar Abba Ibrahim Early Life and Education

Bukar Abba Ibrahim, born in October 1950, though without a precise date, embarked on his educational journey by attending primary school in 1957. In 1965, he continued his studies at Government College in Maiduguri.

Following his completion of the West African School Certificate Examination in 1970, he gained admission to Ahmadu Bello University in 1972, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Quantity Surveying in 1975.

Thereafter, he undertook post-graduate professional training in the United Kingdom from 1981 to 1982, which led to his qualification as an associate member of the Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors.

Bukar Abba Ibrahim had a long and distinguished career in politics and public service. He began his career in 1976 as a Borno State civil servant. Between 1982 and 1984, he was a Partner at Konti – SAB Associates.

From 1984 to 1988, he was the Commissioner of Works in Borno State.

In December 1991, Bukar Abba Ibrahim contested and emerged victorious in the gubernatorial election in Yobe State, running under the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He assumed the gubernatorial position, serving until November 1993, when the military assumed control of the government.

In January 1999, he was again elected governor of Yobe State, this time under the banner of the All People’s Party (APP), which later became the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP). He was re-elected in 2003 for a second four-year term.

During his tenure as governor, he restructured the state’s emirates from four to thirteen, and implemented the new emirates on 6 January 2000.

In 2007, he was elected as the senator representing the Yobe East senatorial district. He was re-elected in 2011 and 2015, and served until 2019.

As a senator, he was a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party, and served as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change.

Bukar Abba Ibrahim Family,  Wives and Children

Bukar Abba Ibrahim married three wives: Hajiya (Dr) Maryam Abba Ibrahim, Hajiya Aishatu Ibrahim and Hajiya Khadijat Ibrahim.  One of his wives, Khadijat, is the current member representing Tarmuwa/Gulani/Damaturu/Gujba and former minister of state for foreign affairs.

He had 17 children, some of whom are also involved in politics. His son, Mohammed Bukar Abba Ibrahim, is the current governor of Yobe State. His daughter, Fatima Bukar Abba Ibrahim, is the current senator for Yobe Central.

His other children are: Abubakar, Amina, Aisha, Zainab, Umar, Halima, Ibrahim, Asmau, Hauwa, Musa, Khairat, Ahmad, Yusuf and Maryam.

Bukar Abba Ibrahim’s Death

Bukar Abba Ibrahim died on February 4, 2024 in Saudi Arabia while receiving treatment for a protracted illness. He was 73 years old at the time of his death.

He was buried in the Holy Land according to Islamic rites. He is survived by his three wives and several children, including Khadija Ibrahim, a former minister of state for foreign affairs.
