He worked as a Grade A Officer at Indian Oil Corporation for three years before joining the IPS in 2013. He cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2013 with an All India Rank of 7 and joined the IAS in 2014. He belongs to the Odisha cadre and has served in various districts and departments.

Commencing his IAS tenure in September 2014, Rana underwent rigorous training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand.
