Gbenga Alade was born on June 15, 1965, in Lagos, Nigeria. Gbenga grew up in a middle-class family with his parents and siblings. His father was a civil servant and his mother was a teacher. He attended a local high school, where he excelled in academics and extracurricular activities.
Gbenga Alade completed his secondary education in 1981 and enrolled at the University of Lagos, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Nigeria.

Gbenga Alade Career
Gbenga Alade started his professional career as a trainee accountant at Arthur Andersen, a leading accounting firm, in 1988. He gained valuable experience in auditing, taxation, and consulting, working with various clients and industries.
He also obtained his certification as a chartered accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in 1990. He then joined Citibank Nigeria, a subsidiary of Citigroup, one of the largest banks in the world, as a Relationship Manager in 1992.
He rose through the ranks and became the Head of Corporate Finance in 1998 and the Head of Global Transaction Services in 2000. He was responsible for managing and growing the bank’s corporate and institutional clients, as well as providing innovative solutions and products to meet their needs.
Gbenga Alade left Citibank Nigeria in 2002 and moved to Canada, where he joined Bank of Montreal, one of the top five banks in the country, as a Senior Manager in the Corporate Banking Group. He handled a portfolio of large and medium-sized enterprises in various sectors, such as energy, mining, manufacturing, and retail. He also developed and executed strategies to increase the bank’s market share and profitability in the region. He worked at Bank of Montreal for four years, until 2006, when he returned to Nigeria.
Gbenga Alade rejoined Citibank Nigeria in 2006 as the Director of Corporate and Investment Banking. He led a team of professionals who provided a range of services, such as mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, structured finance, trade finance, and cash management, to the bank’s clients across Nigeria and West Africa.
He also oversaw the bank’s compliance, risk management, and governance functions. He was instrumental in expanding the bank’s presence and reputation in the Nigerian market, as well as securing some of the largest and most complex transactions in the region. He was recognized as one of the best bankers in Africa by various publications and organizations.
Gbenga Alade left Citibank Nigeria in 2012 and joined Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), one of the leading banks in Nigeria, as the Executive Director of Enterprise Risk Management. He was in charge of developing and implementing the bank’s risk management framework, policies, and processes, covering credit, market, operational, and reputational risks. He also supervised the bank’s internal audit, business continuity, and information security functions.
Gbenga Alade was appointed as the Managing Director and CEO of Guaranty Trust Bank (UK) Ltd, a subsidiary of GTBank, in 2015. He relocated to London, where he led the bank’s operations and strategy in the UK and Europe. He was responsible for driving the bank’s growth and performance, as well as enhancing its customer service and corporate governance standards. He also established and maintained strong relationships with the bank’s stakeholders, such as regulators, investors, partners, and clients. He successfully positioned the bank as a leading provider of banking and financial services to the African diaspora and businesses in the UK and Europe.
