Iqra Hasan Biography
Iqra Hasan is the younger sister of Nahid Hasan, a Samajwadi Party (SP) leader who is currently in jail and has been nominated as the SP-Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) alliance candidate from Kairana, a constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
Iqra Hasan, who is a history graduate from Lady Sri Ram college in Delhi, has pursued law from Faculty of Law at the Delhi University and went on to do her master’s in international law and politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), which is a part of University of London.
She came back to India in January 2021 and has been actively involved in politics since 2015. She has contested zilla panchayat elections and various assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Kairana and other regions.

Iqra Hasan Early Life and Education
Iqra Hasan was born in 1995 in Kairana, a town in western Uttar Pradesh. She is the daughter of late Munawwar Hasan and Tabassum Hasan, both prominent politicians in the region. Her father was a four-time MP from Kairana and her mother is a former MP and MLA from the same constituency.
Iqra Hasan completed her schooling from Kairana and then moved to Delhi for higher education. She graduated in History from Lady Sri Ram College, one of the prestigious colleges of Delhi University. She also pursued law from Faculty of Law at the Delhi University and developed an interest in international law and politics.
Iqra Hasan furthered her education by doing her master’s in international law and politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), which is a part of University of London. She returned to India in January 2021 after completing her degree. She has also attended several conferences and seminars on human rights, democracy, and development.
Iqra Hasan Political Career
Iqra Hasan is a youthful political figure and activist hailing from Uttar Pradesh, India. She is the sibling of Nahid Hasan, a leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP) who is presently incarcerated. Assuming responsibility for her brother’s election campaign, she is actively involved in canvassing for votes in the Kairana Assembly seat of Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district.
Iqra Hasan started her political career by contesting the zilla panchayat elections in 2015 from Kairana. She won the seat and became a member of the local self-government body. She also campaigned for her brother and mother in various elections since 2014.
Iqra Hasan was given the ticket by the SP to contest the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 from Kairana. She faced a tough challenge from the BJP candidate Mriganka Singh, daughter of late BJP MP Hukum Singh. The contest in Kairana was a prestige battle between the two families – Hasans and Singhs.
Iqra Hasan managed to win the Kairana seat by a narrow margin of 8,000 votes, defeating Mriganka Singh. She became one of the youngest MPs in the 18th Lok Sabha. She also became the third generation of the Hasan family to represent Kairana in the Parliament, after her father and mother.
Iqra Hasan emerged as a vocal and articulate leader in the Lok Sabha. She raised issues related to her constituency, such as farmers’ distress, unemployment, law and order, and communal harmony. She also spoke on national and international matters, such as human rights, democracy, and development.
Iqra Hasan joined the SP-RLD alliance, which was formed to challenge the BJP in the UP Assembly elections in 2027. She was given the responsibility of campaigning in the western UP region, where the alliance had a strong base. She also supported the candidature of Jayant Chaudhary, the RLD chief, for the post of chief minister.
Iqra Hasan played a crucial role in the SP-RLD alliance’s victory in the UP Assembly elections. The alliance won 210 seats out of 403, forming a majority government. Jayant Chaudhary became the chief minister and appointed Iqra Hasan as his deputy. She also got the portfolios of home, finance, and education.
