Jaime Bautista started his career as an auditor at Sycip, Gorres, Velayo & Co. (SGV), the largest and most reputable accounting firm in the Philippines, in 1977. He worked there for four years, gaining valuable experience and exposure in the field of auditing and taxation. Bautista joined the Lucio Tan Group of Companies, one of the largest and most diversified conglomerates in the Philippines, in 1981. He started as a senior vice president of Philippine National Bank (PNB), the country’s second-largest bank, which was then owned by the government but later acquired by the Lucio Tan Group.
He held various positions and responsibilities in different companies within the group, such as MacroAsia Corporation, Macroasia Airport Services Corporation, Macroasia Properties Development Corporation, and ETON Properties Philippines, Inc. He was also the treasurer of Tan Yan Kee Foundation, Inc., the corporate social responsibility arm of the group.
Bautista became the president and chief operating officer of Philippine Airlines (PAL) in 2004. He was the first non-family member to hold the top position in the airline, which was previously owned by the government but later privatized by the Lucio Tan Group.
Bautista retired from PAL for the first time in 2012, after leading the airline for eight years. He was succeeded by Ramon Ang, the president and chief executive officer of San Miguel Corporation, which acquired a 49% stake in PAL in 2012.
