Kashim Shettima was born on September 2, 1966 in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, in northeastern Nigeria. He belongs to the Shettima Mustafa Kuttayibe family, a prominent clan in the Kanuri ethnic group.

Shettima began his education at Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri, where he enrolled in 1972. He completed his primary education in 1978 and proceeded to Government Community Secondary School in Biu, a town in southern Borno State. He spent two years there before transferring to Government Science Secondary School in Potiskum, a town in neighboring Yobe State. He graduated from secondary school in 1983 with excellent grades.

Shettima’s academic prowess earned him admission into the University of Maiduguri, one of the prestigious federal universities in Nigeria. He chose to study agricultural economics, a field that combines the principles of economics and agriculture. He was in the banking sector for 14 years until 2007.

Shettima entered politics in 2007, when he was appointed as the commissioner for finance and economic development in Borno State by Governor Ali Modu Sheriff.
