Mark Harmon, born Thomas Mark Harmon on September 2, 1951, in Burbank, California, is an American actor best known for his role as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the long-running television series “NCIS.” He comes from a family deeply rooted in the entertainment industry. His father, Tom Harmon, was a prominent football player who won the Heisman Trophy in 1940 and later became a sportscaster. His mother, Elyse Knox, was an actress and model.
Harmon attended Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles before enrolling at Pierce College, where he played football. Later, he transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he continued his football career. Harmon was a standout quarterback for the UCLA Bruins and led the team to victory in the 1972 Rose Bowl. He graduated from UCLA with a degree in Communications.
After college, Harmon briefly pursued a career in professional football. He played as a quarterback for the New England Patriots and the Washington Redskins in the National Football League (NFL) before deciding to pursue acting full-time.
