Neena Gupta Mathematician Biography
Neena Gupta is a professor and mathematician at the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata. She is known for her work in commutative algebra and affine algebraic geometry. She has won several awards, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the Nari Shakti Puraskar, and the Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians from developing countries.
She is the fourth Indian and the third woman to receive the Ramanujan Prize. She is also the youngest and the third woman to win the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize. She solved the Zariski Cancellation Problem, a 70-year-old mathematics puzzle, in 2014.

Neena Gupta was born in 1984 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. She completed her schooling at the Khalsa Model Senior Secondary School in Kolkata. She then pursued her degree in Mathematics honours from Bethune College, Kolkata in 2006. She was a brilliant student who excelled in her studies and won several prizes and scholarships.
Neena Gupta continued her education in mathematics at the post-graduate level from ISI, where she earned her M.Math. degree in 2008 and her Ph.D. degree in 2011. Her specialization was commutative algebra, a branch of mathematics that studies the properties of algebraic structures like rings and modules.
Her doctoral advisor was Prof. Amartya Dutta, a distinguished mathematician and former director of ISI. Her dissertation was titled “Some results on Laurent polynomial fibrations and Quasi A*-algebras”.

Neena Gupta Mathematician Career
Neena Gupta started her career as a visiting scientist at ISI Kolkata in 2012, after completing her Ph.D. degree in mathematics under the guidance of Prof. Amartya Dutta. She then joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai as a visiting fellow for a few months, where she continued her research in algebraic geometry. She returned to ISI Kolkata as an INSPIRE faculty in December 2012, and became a professor at the Statistics and Mathematics Unit in June 2014.
Neena Gupta has published several research papers in reputed journals and conferences, such as the Journal of Algebra, the Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society, the Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra, and the International Mathematics Research Notices. She has also collaborated with other eminent mathematicians from India and abroad, such as Prof. V. Balaji, Prof. A. J. Parameswaran, Prof. S. M. Bhatwadekar, Prof. J. K. Verma, Prof. H.
