Yemi Cardoso was born as Olayemi Micheal Cardoso in Lagos, Nigeria on 10 July 1957.

He began his early education at Corona School Ikoyi and completed it at St. Gregory’s College, Lagos State. He then attended Aston University, United Kingdom, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) in Managerial and Administrative Studies in 1980.

He pursued a Master’s degree in Public Administration at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government (HKS), graduating in 2005 as a recipient of the prestigious Michael Romer Memorial Scholarship.

Yemi Cardoso is a distinguished Nigerian banker and public policy maker, renowned for his extensive leadership roles within the banking, financial, and development sectors.

He started his professional journey at Howard Tilly & Co. as a chartered accountant in London before venturing into the banking sector. In 1981, he secured a role at the esteemed Citibank, then the world’s largest financial services organization.

Undergoing the Citibank credit training program in Athens, Greece, he later transitioned to Citibank’s branch in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, in 1982. Operating within the West Africa Regional Office/Non-Presence Country desk, he oversaw various countries in the sub-region where Citibank held exposure to sovereign debt but lacked physical presence.

In 1984, he returned to Citibank as one of the founding members of Nigeria International Bank Limited, where he assumed the position of Head of the World Corporation Group. In this capacity, he oversaw vital global relationships for Citibank. Additionally, he served as a member of the bank’s credit committee, tasked with evaluating and sanctioning credit limits.

Subsequently, he co-founded the Citizens International Bank, where he held the position of Executive Director for a period of eight years. On September 15, 2023, President Bola Tinubu appointed Cardoso to assume the role of Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria for a term of five years, subject to confirmation by the Nigerian Senate. Subsequently, on September 23, 2023, Cardoso’s appointment was officially confirmed, solidifying his position as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
