Kavita Choudhary was an Indian television actress, director, producer and writer, who passed away on 15 February 2024 due to a heart attack.

She was well known for her portrayal of IPS officer Kalyani Singh in the Doordarshan series Udaan, which was inspired by the life of her elder sister, Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya, India’s first woman Director General of Police.

She was also famous for playing the role of Lalita ji in the Surf detergent commercials in the late 1980s.

Kavita Choudhary was born on 25 July 1957 in Amritsar, India. She belonged to a family of achievers, as her elder sister, Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya, became India’s second woman IPS officer and the first woman Director General of Police of a state. Kavita was inspired by her sister’s courage and determination to serve the nation.

Kavita completed her schooling from Shri Ram Ashram School in Amritsar, where she developed an interest in acting and drama.

After finishing her higher education from Hindu College in Amritsar, Kavita moved to New Delhi to pursue her passion for theatre.

She joined the prestigious National School of Drama, where she honed her skills and learned from eminent personalities like Satish Kaushik, Anupam Kher, Govind Namdev, and Anang Desai. She graduated from NSD in 1981 and started her career as a television actress.

Kavita started her career in 1981 with the TV series Apradhi Kaun! on DD National. She followed it up with another TV series, Raj Se Swaraj, in the same year.

She gained prominence for her portrayal of IPS Officer Kalyani Singh in the television series “Udaan” (1989-1991), a show inspired by the life of her sister, Kanchan. Besides acting, she also wrote, produced, and directed the TV series, which won many awards and accolades.

In the late 1980s, she became a household name as Lalita ji, the iconic housewife character in Surf detergent television commercials produced by Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL).

Her character as Lalita ji served as an inspiration for women nationwide during that era. She also acted in the film Ek Aur Suhagan (1990) and the TV series Your Honour (2000) and IPS Diaries.

Kavita passed away on 15 February 2024 due to a heart attack. She was 67 years old at the time of her death. According to her nephew, Ajay Sayal, Kavita had been suffering from cancer for a few years and was undergoing treatment.

She was staying in Amritsar with her family and was admitted to Parvati Devi Hospital after she complained of chest pain. She suffered a cardiac arrest and could not be revived. Her funeral took place on 16 February 2024 in Amritsar.
