Kenny Motsamai is a South African anti-apartheid activist, convicted murderer and politician. He is a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters party and a permanent delegate to the National Council of Provinces from Gauteng since May 2019.

He was imprisoned for nearly three decades for killing a white traffic officer during a bank robbery in 1989.

He refused to apologise or show remorse for his crime, claiming it was a political act. He was released on parole in January 2017.

Kenny Motsamai is a South African politician and former anti-apartheid activist. He was born as Shadrack Doshani in the early 1960s. He was a military commander in the Azanian People’s Liberation Army (APLA), the military wing of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) during apartheid.

He was imprisoned for close to three decades for killing a foreign traffic officer during a bank robbery in 1989. He was released on day parole in 2016 and on full parole in 2017, with certain conditions such as his movement being monitored and not being allowed to participate in any political activities .

He joined the EFF in 2018 and became a permanent delegate to the National Council of Provinces from Gauteng in 201912. He is one of the few former APLA combatants to hold public office in South Africa.

Why Was Kenny Motsamai Imprisoned?

Kenny Motsamai led a bank robbery in Rustenburg in 1989, which was sanctioned by the PAC to finance its anti-apartheid activities. He killed a white traffic officer during the robbery and was arrested after returning from military training in Ethiopia.

He was convicted and sentenced to two life sentences in 1989, which was considered a political act by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), but later changed to armed robbery by the authorities . He was denied amnesty by the TRC because the crime was not of a political nature.

He refused to apologise or show remorse for the killing of the officer, saying that no white person had ever apologised for apartheid. He was granted parole in 2017 and subsequently became a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party in 2018. Since May 2019, he has served as a permanent delegate to the National Council of Provinces from Gauteng.
