Manoj Kumar Sharma is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer belonging to the 2005 batch of the Maharashtra cadre. Presently, he holds the position of Additional Commissioner within the West Region of Mumbai. He is known for his inspiring story of overcoming poverty and academic failure to become an IPS officer.

His life was recently adapted into a biopic titled 12th Fail, which was released in October 2023. He is married to Shraddha Joshi Sharma, who is an IRS officer and his childhood classmate. He has a son and a daughter.

Manoj Kumar Sharma, an IPS officer, was born on July 3, 1975, in Bilgaon Chaudhari village, Morena, Madhya Pradesh. His father, Ramveer Sharma, previously worked for the Madhya Pradesh government’s Agriculture Department. Manoj has a brother and a sister.

During his schooling in Morena, he initially lacked interest in academics, resulting in a third division in both his 9th and 10th grades. Struggling further, he failed all subjects except Hindi in his 12th-grade exams due to increased supervision by a new Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Morena.

Upon relocating to Gwalior, Manoj pursued his undergraduate studies at the Maharani Laxmi Bai Government College of Excellence. Simultaneously, in New Delhi, he pursued an MA in History and later a PhD in Journalism while preparing for the UPSC exams. His doctoral thesis focused on the “Role of Media in the Development of Rural India.
