Abimbola Ogunbanjo, also known as Bamofin, was a prominent Nigerian lawyer, businessman, and philanthropist. He served as the Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc (NGX Group), the non-operating holding company resulting from the demutualisation of The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) from 2021 to 2022.
He was also the Managing Partner of Chris Ogunbanjo LP, a leading corporate law firm in Nigeria. He served on the boards of several multinational corporations and non-profit organizations, and was a Global Ambassador for the Cervical Cancer-Free Nigeria campaign.
He died in a helicopter crash on February 9, 2024, along with his friend Herbert Wigwe, the CEO of Access Bank, and their families. He was widely mourned as a visionary leader and a generous benefactor.

Bamofin Ogunbanjo was born in Nigeria to the family of Chris and Hilda Ogunbanjo, OFR, CON, who were distinguished figures in corporate law, industry, and philanthropy.
He received his early education at Corona School Apapa, University of Lagos Staff School, Claremont School in Hastings, Sussex, and Igbobi College in Lagos before continuing his studies at Millfield School in Street, Somerset, England, where he obtained his GCE “O” Levels.

Ogunbanjo began his career as a credit analyst at Chase Manhattan Bank (Nigeria) Limited. He gained valuable experience in the banking sector, working on various financial transactions and projects. He developed a keen interest in the capital markets and the legal aspects of business operations.
In 1990, he became a member of the prestigious law firm Chris Ogunbanjo LP, eventually rising to the position of managing partner. He followed in the footsteps of his father, Chris Ogunbanjo, a distinguished and foremost corporate lawyer, industrialist and philanthropist. He possessed extensive expertise in commercial law, specializing in capital markets, shipping, and mergers and acquisitions. He represented and advised many local and international clients, including governments, corporations, and individuals.
He served as the President of the National Council of the NSE from 2017 to 2021. He played a pivotal role in the demutualisation of the NSE, which transformed the exchange from a member-owned entity to a public limited company. He also oversaw the implementation of various reforms and initiatives to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and competitiveness of the Nigerian capital market.
In 2021, he was appointed as the Group Chairman of the NGX Group, the non-operating holding company that emerged from the demutualisation of the NSE. He was responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight to the group and its subsidiaries, namely Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), the operating exchange; NGX Regulation Limited (NGX REGCO), the independent regulatory arm; and NGX Real Estate Limited (NGX RELCO), the real estate company. He also served on the boards of several multinational corporations and non-profit organizations, such as Beta Glass Plc and the University of Buckingham Centre for Extractive Studies Advisory Board.

Abimbola Ogunbanjo Wife and Children
Abimbola Ogunbanjo was married to Oluwatoyin Ogunbanjo, a lawyer and a partner at Chris Ogunbanjo LP. They had three children: Olumide, Oluwaseun, and Oluwadara. Oluwatoyin and Oluwadara were also on board the helicopter that crashed on February 9, 2024, along with Abimbola and his friend Herbert Wigwe, the CEO of Access Bank, and their families. Olumide and Oluwaseun survived the tragic accident, but they lost their parents and their sister.
