Ali Amin Gandapur is a Pakistani politician who is currently serving as the 18th Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in office since 2 March 2024. He is a member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and a close ally of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

He has also served as the Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan from 2018 to 2022, and as the Provincial Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for Revenue and Estate from 2013 to 2018.

Ali Amin Gandapur was born into a politically active family of the Gandapur tribe, which belongs to the Pashtun ethnic group. His father, Major (retd) Aminullah Gandapur, was a former caretaker cabinet member under the military regime of Pervez Musharraf. His brother, Sardar Faisal Amin Khan Gandapur, is also a politician. Gandapur hails from Kulachi, a town in the Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Gandapur received his early education at the Saint Helens High School in Dera Ismail Khan, where he developed an interest in sports, especially squash. He later moved to Peshawar, the capital city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and completed his matriculation from the Police Model School.

Gandapur pursued his higher education at the Gomal University in Dera Ismail Khan, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts (Honors) degree. He also became involved in student politics, and joined the PTI, which was founded by Imran Khan in 1996.

Ali Amin Gandapur Career

Ali Amin Gandapur’s political journey began with his election to the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2013 as a member of the PTI. He received 14,047 votes and defeated an independent candidate, Qayyum Nawaz. He was appointed as the Provincial Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for Revenue and Estate, and served in this capacity until 2018.

In 2018, Gandapur contested and won two seats in the general elections: one from the National Assembly of Pakistan (NA-38 Dera Ismail Khan-I) and one from the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (PK-97 Dera Ismail Khan-III). He vacated his provincial seat and retained his national seat. He was subsequently appointed as the Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, a position he held until 2022. He was in charge of managing the affairs of the disputed territories of Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, and advocated for their rights and interests at the national and international levels.

In 2022, Gandapur resigned from his federal ministry and decided to run for the office of the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, after the previous chief minister, Mahmood Khan, was dismissed by the Supreme Court of Pakistan on charges of corruption and mismanagement. Gandapur was nominated by Imran Khan as the PTI’s candidate for the chief ministership, and received the support of the majority of the PTI’s parliamentary bloc in the province.

In 2024, Gandapur was elected as the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, after securing 90 votes in the provincial assembly, defeating the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate, Ibadullah Khan, who got 16 votes. He became the 18th chief minister of the province, and the second one from the PTI. He took oath on 2 March 2024, and formed his cabinet with the coalition partners of the PTI, including the Sunni Ittehad Council, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, and the Awami National Party.
