Abbas began his career as a primary school teacher from 1981 to 1988 before becoming a lecturer at a polytechnic in 1989. He then joined the Kaduna State University (KASU) as a lecturer and taught there until 2001. He has a doctorate degree in business management and has received several awards and recognitions for his contributions to education in Nigeria.
He moved to the private sector in 2001 and worked as a marketing manager at the Nigerian Tobacco Distribution Company, now the British-American Tobacco Company, until 2005. He gained valuable experience and skills in the field of marketing and management, which he later applied to his political career.
Abbas joined politics in 2010 and contested for the House of Representatives seat in 2011 and won. He represented the Zaria Federal Constituency in Kaduna State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He sponsored the most bills in the 8th assembly from 2015 to 2019, with a record-breaking total of 74 bills, 21 of which were signed into law between 2019 and 2023.
He has served on multiple committees in the House, including Commerce, Finance, Special Duties, Defence, Public Procurement, and the National Planning and Economic Development Committee. He was also the Vice Chairman of the Legislative Compliance Committee and the House Committee Chairman for Land Transport. Abbas was elected Speaker of the 10th Assembly with a majority of 353 votes out of 359 votes in 2023. He succeeded Femi Gbajabiamila who became the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu.
