Early Life and Education

Dauda Lawal Dare was born on September 2, 1965 in Gusau, Zamfara state, into a family involved in the textile industry. He got his primary education in Guga village, Katsina state, and his secondary education in Government Secondary School, Kankia. He obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in political science from Ahmadu Bello University in 1987 and 1992, respectively. He also holds a PhD in business administration from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

He furthered his education by taking courses at prestigious universities, such as the London School of Economics, Harvard Business School, Oxford University Business School, and Lagos Business School.

Dauda Lawal Dare is the third child of Lawal Muhammad Dare, a textile merchant in Gusau, Zamfara state. He was raised by his maternal grandparents in Guga village, Katsina state, where he got his primary education.

Dauda Lawal Dare is the governor of Zamfara state and a former banker. He has had a diverse and successful career in various fields, such as politics, banking, diplomacy, and education.

In 1989, he commenced his professional journey as a political education officer at the Agency for Mass Mobilization for Social and Economic Reliance Nigeria. Later that same year, he took on the role of assistant general manager at Westex Nigeria Limited.

By 1994, he transitioned to the role of assistant consular officer (immigration) and subsequently served as the chief protocol officer at the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, D.C., US.

In May 2003, he commenced his tenure at First Bank of Nigeria Plc as a relationship manager in commercial banking. Over time, he held diverse roles within the organization, serving as a senior manager at the Abuja Area office, a business development manager in Abuja, a principal manager and group head at PSG II, an assistant general manager in Maitama, and later progressed to the position of deputy general manager as the business development manager in Maitama, and concurrently held the role of group head in the public sector in Abuja.

In 2012, he became the executive director, public sector, North, of First Bank of Nigeria Plc.

He joined partisan politics in the run up to the 2019 general elections.

He contested and won the 2023 Zamfara state gubernatorial election under the People Democratic Party (PDP), defeating his rival, Governor Bello Matawalle of the APC.

He was sworn in as a governor on May 29, 2023.

Additionally, he holds an honorary Doctorate degree in Business Administration (DBA) from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. In 2021, he was honored with the prestigious African Achievers Award at Kensington Palace, London.
